Abstract

The feasibility of enhancing depleted population of white seabass Atractoscion nobilis has been investigated since 1983. During 1986-1993, more than 153,000 tagged juvenile white seabass were released into Mission Bay, California. The size of fish released varied from 31 to 317 mm total length (TL); the majority (55%) were between 80 and 120 mm TL. Oxtetracycline was used initially to mark fish prior to release. This marker was easy to administer but did not identify individual release batches and failed to persist for more than 4 years. Coded wire tags have been used since 1990. We found white seabass had a high rate and long duration of tag retention (>90% after 300 d).
